Born Homer Hine Stewart in New Haven, Vt., and attended Middlebury College under that name, changing the spelling later in life. He was a teacher in Springfield, Vt. (1882-1883), was admitted to the bar in 1839, and practiced law in Lockport, N.Y. He was related to the Stewart family of Middlebury, Vt. From the description of Homer Hine Stuart papers, 1881-1882.
